No Login Required
in to execute? I would like to be able to put specific reports in a
open folder so that people can run them without login.
Thanks

You can select the folder, then press properties> Security. You can
add users there. There is a catch though because different Reporting
Servers work in different ways. Now, my company uses Windows Login
for the Reporting Server. Previously, this was separate and everyone
had a separate account for RptServ, SQLServ, and all other tools.
Just add the users under the security tab, make sure they're BROWSERS
otherwise you may go back to the folder and find it... blank.|||On May 4, 11:34 am, Ayman <ayma...@.gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks, but right when I iopen my browser on my desktop and point to
the folder, I get login required. I am actually trying t use the
following logic and not even go to the report server.
http://rpt-serv/ReportServer?/sales%2fC+of+C&shipnum=2022222&rs:Format=PDF
If I put this in a browser, I can get my report output in .pdf format,
without going to the webpage. I would just like to retreive this
report without stopping for a login prompt. If I could do that, then
I can write a front end prompt in my app.
Enter ship number [1234544]
Make sense?

I understand, you want the entire ReportServer not to have a login.
Here our's is passed through by Windows Accounts... so we never get
the login screen. Our DBA is out, I'll try to figure it out with him
on Monday and let you know. I'm sure if you can do a Windows
Authentication pass then there is a way to just keep it open to anyone
who is on your Intranet.|||On May 4, 12:11 pm, Ayman <ayma...@.gmail.com> wrote:

No Lock
Lets say i have a view.
vuTestingNoLocks
this view looks like this...
Create View vuTestingNoLocks as
SElect *
From dbo.Employees
inner Join dbo.EmployeeTerritories on EmployeeTerritories.EmployeeID = Employees.EmployeeID
If I select from this view using Select * From vuTestingNoLocks (NOLOCK)
Does the (nolock) command propegate down through the tables? Meaning will it scan tables that are locked still ignoring their locks?
I think you should be able to test it out and come to your own conclusions. Let me know what you are going to interpret from this.
In one window, create these tables, populate dummy data and create the view
Code Snippet
--Start of window1
create table t1 (t1id int identity(10,10),
t1code char(2)
)
create table t2 (t2id int,
t2name varchar(10)
)
insert t1 select 'AB'
insert t1 select 'BC'
insert t1 select 'CD'
insert t2 select 10, 'Group AB'
insert t2 select 20, 'Group BC'
insert t2 select 30, 'Group CD'
create view vw_t1_t2 as
select t1id, t1code, t2name
from t1 join t2
on t1.t1id = t2id
--End of window1

--we are setting up to take exclusive lock
begin tran
update vw_t1_t2

--end of window2
--start of window3
--Issue this once
select * from vw_t1_t2 (nolock)
--and this later
select * from vw_t1_t2
--end of window3
|||Yes, NOLOCK table hint will be propageted to the tables in view defination.
It is also very usefull for indexed views as they are treated as tables as well.
Please see following article for more detail.

No Factory?
<system.data>
<DbProviderFactories>
<add name="Sql Everywhere Data Provider"
invariant="System.Data.SqlServerCe"
description=".NET Framework Data Provider for Microsoft SQL
Everywhere CTP Edition 3.1"
type="System.Data.SqlServerCe.SqlServerCeFactory,
System.Data.SqlServerCe, Version=9.0.242.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91"/>
</DbProviderFactories>
</system.data>
However, it fails to load when I call DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("System.Data.SqlServerCe");
The root cause: In the SQL Everywhere dll, System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll,
there appears to be no class such as SqlServerCeFactory. Nor anything
like unto it was found in the object browser.
Is this true? If so, it really sucks. What happened to SQL Everywhere
being compatible with the full .Net 2.0 framework?
Nathan
The type in the above Machine.Config entry is wrong. Please have a look at http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=674426&SiteID=17

No Data-Driven Subscription Button
I have a test server and a production RS server. On the test server I can
create data-driven subscriptions with no problems. However, on the
production server I do not get the "New Data-Driven Subscription" button and
I can't figure out why.
- I'm a domain administrator so I have local admin rights on both boxes.
- I'm Content Manager on both boxes
- The Config files look identical (impersonate is on for both of them,
however the connection string is encrypted so it could be that it's running
under a user without priveleges.)
- I'm not using integrated security for the data sources
- The data sources are shared. I found this on MSDN: "This button is not
available when you access subscriptions through a shared data source", but
the development server works okay with a shared data source, and even when I
switch a report over to use a non-shared (custom) data source the button is
not availab.e
- The ReportServer's are running under the same account
Obviously I'm missing something. Any ideas?
Thx, JoelAre you sure the production server has the Enterprise Edition of Reporting
Services installed? Data-driven subscriptions are not available in the
Standard Edition.

Next question: is Sql Server Enterprise Edition required to have Reporting
Services Enterprise Edition installed or are they mutually exclusive? I
currently only have servers with Sql Server Standard Edition.

Why not include data driven subscriptions in the SE version of SRS? It seems
to be a basic element. Although, I understand it will drive some purchases
of Sql Server EE.

Anyawy, we had to make some decisions about what would go in each edition.
After talking to customers, data driven subscriptions seemed like a
reasonable EE feature.

Technically speaking, I could request a SRS EE cd, install it, and then
point it to a STD Edition Sql Server (on another machine). But, to do this,
an Sql Server EE license is required, although Sql Server EE wouldn't
necessarily need to be installed.
The pricing info for a Sql Server EE license is the same as purchasing the
software correct?
Thanks!!

No data in datagrid
Could anyone help me?
I'm trying to create a datagrid using ASP.NET. It works fine
except the coloum that is supposed to display the entrydate is blank. All
the other information displays correctly.
I used the following code to create the table on the SQL server.
CREATE TABLE ManuscriptList
(
u_id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY,
u_manuscripttitle VARCHAR( 100 ),
u_manuscriptauthor VARCHAR( 100 ),
u_genre VARCHAR( 100 ),
u_wordcount VARCHAR( 100 ),
u_critiquecount VARCHAR( 100 ),
u_entrydate DATETIME Default getDate()
)
Is the problem something to do with the last line [i.e. u_entrydate DATETIME
Default getDate()] or is it something to do with the ASP.NET code?
Thanks for your time

Nice feature for next SQL server version
the system create indexes at runtime?
It defenitely would help lazy programmers :)I would add some statistics to help us know whether indexes are used or not (so we can drop the
indexes not being used). Sounds like a case for sqlwish@.microsoft.com. :-)

Tuning Wizard? I try it from time to time when I'm stumped and 99% of the
time it ends up either not being able to do anything with the query or
recommends a gigantic composite index that slows performance... Very
annoying.

Errr.. never. I've hardly ever used it. I expect it can give useful results
if supplied with a suitable Profiler trace but I expect most full-time
administrators and designers prefer to do this stuff for themselves based on
business requirements and their own research.
I don't think generating indexes at "runtime" could offer anything better.
Creating indexes without the opportunity for review by the
administrator/designer sounds pretty dangerous to me - if that's what the OP
was suggesting.

I'd absolutely hate it. Well building a table of suggested indexes might be
nice, but making the change automagically would introduce more problems than
it was worth IMO.

I do not agree quite.
I'd use it personally on projects, but the problem is I DO NOT manage the
SQL server, so I should instruct the DBADMIN to optimize or start an
optimization session. Of course, I include indexes at design but I might
forget some of them and more, I have some sort of SQL stored procedures,
which can sort and filter on ANY column. So if the -client- uses a lot of
queries of a specific type, SQL Server should decide at a certain defined
point, to add the index.
It would be unwise of me to add indexes for all possible combinations on
deployment.

Allrighty,
in case we can define withhold parameters for auto-indexing and such it
would be no problem. The designer still has to have control over it but the
designer should not be too dependend on the dbadmin for helping or
co-operating on optimizing (and vice-versa)|||"David Portas" <REMOVE_BEFORE_REPLYING_dportas@.acm.org> wrote in message

Again, I do not suppose that SQL blindly will do that, I suggest a feature
that can be enabled per table, so if a table consists of 20 columns,
potentially, it could create 20 or more (if more columns are combined)
indexes SQL should decide at some points whether or not to create one.

You seem to be suggesting that the fewer times the dba and the system
designer have to speak the better. I'd have though the polar opposite were
true. design and admin are tasks that are inextricably linked.

I absolutely do not say that there is a **one fits all* way of working. In
some cases you are right. In other cases, you don't want to have long talks
with the dbadmin that you even don't know, you give him a list of options
(db size, backup needs, etc) but you don't want to beg to get him or her
optimize *your app* if he has no budget for it and you have no priviliges to
start a tracelog.

ps; I'd like to stress again my original point. I have an app (CRM like)
where you *cannot* optimize everything on forehand! The app can only be
optimized in combination of user statistics, so if the user likes to search
on postalcode only or on his own favorite fields, SQL server should decide
for that environment, to add a new index. My app is that flexible that the
user can sort and search on any column. You don't want to add indexes for
any column do you? :)

NH: Best Practices Approach - call stored proc - or run it via linked server?
what pro's cons would there be to having a linked server run a local stored proc against another sql server or create that stored proc on that other sql server and call it from there in the c# code.
i would think that calling the stored proc would be more efficient that running a linked server - but please let me know your thoughts. I'm not sure i can have permission to add a stored proc on that server, so possibly the linked server is the only solution - but if i can put a stored proc on that server should i?
thanks.
Jeff
anyone?|||One obvious thing to keep in mind is the performance. Depending on your network the executiion time could be different.
Now I am not sure if I understand your question. If you do not have permission to create the stored proc on the original server you would still need access to the underlying tables if you want to access them through server B, irrespective of whether its via stored proc or directly T-SQL.
|||well typically I associate using a linked server to pull data from something using openquery such as ibm as400 so my question is do i get access to put the stored proc on the remote sql server (not one of my groups sql servers), or do i ask for setting up a linked server to it and execute the stored proc from my local sql server using the linked server approach.
either way?
get access to put the stored proc right on the sql server and call it in c#?
use the linked server and call it in c#
Just looking for some reason why one way may be better than another, primarily performance, and reducing putting in another possible point of failure.

Those are exactly the reasons why you might want to put the proc directly where the data is.

Next Item in String
Example if the special date is March 26, 2007, I want it to use the next string item, which is April 9, 2007. I can't use +14, because the next string item isn't always +14 days.
Can anyone help me with the formula to use?
Thanks so much in advance! So you want the {Session_Starts.Special_Date} value of the next record? Use the Next function! Look in the help.
Newspaper Columns
trying to create a company address and phone number directory.
Thanks for any help you can offer. In the Body section of the report, open your properties window. There is a
property under layout called columns. Set the number of columns here.
Then, if you want 2 3" columns w/ 1/2" between them, you would set your
report width to 6.5 and your body width to 3".

Newly created stored procedure => master db
create stored procedures under the database that I created. It seems as if
any new procs are created in the master database.
If I create a new proc, it is not displayed under the stored procedure
folder. Iit is displayed in the folder c:\mydocuments\SQL ServerManagement
Studio Express\Projects along with the other procs that I'd created prior to
the upgrade.
If I open the newly created proc then I'm asked to login to the SQL Express
again (I already have Management Studio Express open and logged in to my own
database). Once the proc is open , the combo box "available databases" on the
toolbar displayes, 'master'. So it seems I've logged in to the master
database where the new proc has been created. But it is not displayed in the
Stored Procs of the master either.
What has gone wrong? I should be able to create new stored procs in my
database and not in the master database.
Can someone help - thanksLisa

I don't want to seem ignorant but where do I use this. I'm using Access as
my front end and SQLExpress as the backend. :(
Also - I'm not able to modify any of the previous stored procs. If I make a
modification and save by overwriting the proc, the changes are not there when
I open the proc again.

You mention Sybase several times - are you working with Sybase or with
Microsoft SQL Server? Assuming you're using Microsoft's product, then here
are some quick answers:
1. Use a test database, make changes, test them, and use Profiler to see
what the difference is.
2. Backup/restore is easiest, but log shipping or replication might be
better if you have very large databases, and you want to copy the changes
incrementally or with a short delay.
3. That depends a lot on the environment, but backups and maintenance plans
are the obvious ones.
4. Start/stop with the NET START/STOP command, through Enterprise Manager,
or use any interface (eg. WMI) that can manipulate Windows services. I don't
know what you mean by 'check' the server, but see the DBCC commands in Books
Online, and also look at maintenance plans.
5. Too many to mention, but sp_who2 and sp_lock are very useful.
6. Use Profiler, and filter on query duration to find long-running
statements. Profiler can also display the execution plan.
7. Here, or the microsoft.public.sqlserver.* groups - there are groups for
specific areas such as .security, .xml, .replication etc.
8. That depends on what you want to do - the tools that come with the
product can do most things.
9. Assuming you mean Microsoft SQL Server, then here is one:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...art2/c0761.mspx
10. Books Online, Books Online and Books Online...
Simon|||Thanks a lot for answers. It was great specially the link you sent me.
Just few more questions:
1- What is the best practice for sizing a new Database and
configuration parameters? Any link for that or just a quick comment
from you? Do we have something like init.ora here?
2- I heard that you can write custom-scripts for admin and put them in
master database and access them for all db. Is that the way you can
cutom monitor the db? Can you send me a small example?
3- What is the top 5 troubleshooting and monitoring needs to be done
as a daily basis?

1. As regards sizing, some of the big hardware vendors have sizing guides
for their own hardware, and Books Online has a section on estimating table
sizes. As for init.ora, the general MSSQL approach is that the database
server should be left to manage itself as much as possible - you can change
server-wide settings with sp_configure, but it's not something you should do
unless you really need to. One exception is memory, because MSSQL will take
all the memory on the box by default, so if you have other apps on the
server, you may need to limit how much memory MSSQL should use.
2. This is possible, but it's not really advised - Microsoft doesn't support
it. Which doesn't mean that no one does it, of course - see here for more
information:
http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/Ar...1044/41044.html
3. That depends very much on your enivronment, but monitoring backups,
maintenance jobs and failed logins are one task, as is dealing with
databases where the transaction log fills up. You can set alerts on most
conditions to get a notification and/or automatically run a script in
response.

Newbie: Viewing KPIs thru MOSS
I've create a data cube and subsequent KPIs. I now want to be able to publish these KPIs from within MOSS. All of the literature up until now seemed to indicate that I could easily attached to the KPIs from within MOSS, but now I finding that I need to publish them to Excel then to MOSS. Is this correct?
If so, I do not have Excel 2007, so is there a work around to this? Also, similiar to how Reporting Services when deployed provides the ability to render the reports via the web browser...does this functionality exist within SSAS and KPIs?
Thanks for your time and assistance.

If you follow the blog entry below, you should be able to create a KPI list, add items to this list for SSAS KPI's, and display the KPI's in the list using the MOSS built-in Key Performance Indicators Web Part:
KPI's in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007
|||thanks. When I try to connect to the KPI's from SSAS thru MOSS (as depicted in the blog you sent the link to), I'm asked for a ODC connection.
How do I create/determine what my ODC connection is to my SSAS Cube/KPIs? I've seen ways to create it via Excel, but once again, can I bypass Excel and just create the ODC myself?
Thanks.
|||The Office Data Connection Wizard (which I think is shared among Office apps like Excel and InfoPath) allows you to create ODC files - there may be tools to create ODC files outside of Office, but I'm not aware of them.
