No Management Studio in 2005 Enterprise Edition

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition Evaluation on my

machine and Management Studio or Enterprise Manager is not present. Do

i need to perform extra task or did i do sth wrong when installing this.

It's more likely that you did not install the client components
When you setup program, at one stage wou have choice to check the components you want to install
Client components are grouped under the name orf workstation or something similar (Sorry I don't remeber the exact name))

I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on a WinXP-SP2
workstation and can see some enterprise databases on the network just
fine.

My problem is I cannot register a local database on the local drive for
testing/education purposes.
(I accepted all of the defaults on the install and thought all was
well.)

There are a couple of small databases that are in development in our
group and I need to work on when offline from the network.

Short of uninstalling the whole product and doing it over, what steps
can I take to remedy this so I will be able to work with DB's locally?

Please accept my 2 apologies; first for a late reply, and second if I
am using SQL-Server terms incorrectly.

On a 2nd test box (WinXP-SP2) I have Sql Server 2005 Developer Edition
installed.

What works:
-When I launch Mgmt Studio, I am able to connect to an enterprise SQL
Server box successfully on our network.
-In Mgmt Studio, when I click on "View/Registered Servers", I can see
"W4082107/test". This is my test box. I am under the impression that
"W4082107/test" is a "local" SQL Server where I can copy sample
databases off of the network and compose and work with copies of
Northwind, etc.

What does not work:
-I am not able to have a local instance of SQL server working on my
local drive to do some practice work with SQL Server.

I'll take a look on MSDN, TechNet and the MSKB for a page (maybe a
'step-by-step') that references setting up a local instance of SQL
Server when it is working with the Enterprise servers just fine. I
thought I could install SQLServer Express to get my local databases to
work, but MS says the Developer Edition and Express cannot exist on the
same box.

I hope this clarifies my original request.

Yes and no. You can backup a database on the big SQL Server, and
restore the database on your machine. But this presumes that there
is a network share somewhere, but both you and SQL Server can access.

You can also use the Copy Database Wizard to copy a database with the
SMO method, which copies the database object by object. But CDW is
very buggy, and may not copy everything.

In what way does it not work? Since you provide no information, I
will ask a couple of basic questions:

* You are certain that you installed the Database Engine and not just
only the tools?
* If so, have you ensured that SQL Server is running? Check this in the
SQL Configuration Manager.
* If it is running, do you connect to it properly. I assume that W4082107
is your workstation. The /test should probably be \test, if you have
installed SQL 2005 as a named instance. You can view the instance
names in the Configuration Manager.

No indication of the SQL Server edition in the About window

I installed the SQL Server 2005 standard edition after uninstalling the Express edition.

When i look in the 'About' screen in the 'SQL Server Managment studio', i don't see indication that the SQL Server 2005 i currently work with is the Standard Edition. There are only categories and their numbers of versions.

How do i know that the Edition i work on ,now , is the Standard edition ?

Open up Management Studio and run "select @.@.version". This will tell you your SQL and OS details, including edition.

No Import/Export Option in Mgmt Studio Express

Hi,

I just installed SQL Server 2005 Express. I would like to import tables from

another DB, and I read in the help files that I just need to (1) right-click on

a non-system database in Management Studio Express, and (2) select Import/Export

under the Tasks menu.

I tried this, but my Tasks menu only contains these options: Detach, Shrink,

Backup, Restore, Generate Scripts.

I googled for \"sql server 2005 "no import" tasks\", and it appears that a

couple of people have had this problem -- the only solution I read was to

install the "Workstation Components," but I already have, and still no luck.

Any idea what I need to do? Thanks!

Did you try right clicking on the database in the object explorer window. Try that, and then the All Tasks, Generate SQL Scripts option.|||Okay, I right-clicked on my database in the object explorer, then went to Tasks->Generate Scripts. This database is empty, though (I want to import a SQL Server 7 DB into it), so I end up getting a message that says "There are no objects in database of the types scriptable by this wizard."

Ultimately, I just need to import a SQL Server 7 database into SQL Server 2005 Express, but I can't find an "import" option in 2005. Is there some component I need to install?|||Ah, I think I need SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), and that is apparently not included in SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (see "Unsupported Features" in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365166.aspx). I've downloaded SQL Server Express with Advanced Services from http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/ and installed all components. When I try to create a full-text catalog, I get the following message:

No full-text supported languages found.

select * from sys.fulltext_languages
returns no lines.

How

can neutral, English or maybe Hungarian word breakers be installed?

I reinstalled Sql Server Express with the following changes and now full-text search works:
- I use default instance instead of named instance
- IIS was enabled during installation
- The installation folder was selected so that to be different from the folder of previous installations.

Maybe the Sql Server 2005 wasn't removed correctly before installing Express and some components had conflict with each other. I don't know what the real reason was of the problem. The important thing is that now it works.|||

I Have the same problem, i execute the T-sql statement select * from sys.fulltext_languages and i get zero rows, i uninstalled and installed again and nothing happend i still have zero when executing that statement, i try another computer and there evrything went fine!.. i do have Microsoft Net framework, and everything but i still can get this to work! help please!!!

I have removed and reinstalled SQL Express 3 times, changed the installation path, but no hope.
I can't set it as the default instance since I'm using MSDE as default instance.

Are you sure you actually installed FTS; this feature is not installed by default, you must specifically select it from the feature list. Open up the SQL Configuration Manager and look at the Services node to verify that SQL Server FullText Search is listed and running.

If it's not listed, you didn't install it and you'll need to go into maintenance mode and select it from the feature list to get it installed.

Hello Mike and thanks for the reply.
Of course I have installed FTS and it's listed in the configuration manager.
This problem is driving me crazy, it has taken 3 days from the tight timeframe of my project and I didn't find any solution.
I have removed MSDE, removed everything related to MsSql from the registry, deleted the installation directory, used "Windows install clean up" and reinstalled SQL Express with FTS as default instance may be more than 5 times and no hope.
Is there any way to install these damn languages manually? in the registry or whatever.
May be the problem is that SQL Express (without Advanced services) was installed previously and some trace is kept in the registry.
I don't know!
Any idea is really appreciated.

No Enterprise Manager after install

I've installed MSDE Release Candidate on XP Pro successfully and the server
starts. However, I can't find the Server Enterprise Manager anywhere. Help!
It does appear on the MMC and I don't have any SQL groups on my menu after
the install.

MSDE does not come with EM. All you have is OSQL, the command line tool.
Any reason you are using MSDE 2000 RC? That is no longer supported as it was
a beta.

no DTS

I have just installed sQL sever 2005

now i need to import data from ms access.

i went to "Introducing Business Intelligence Development Studio "/file/ new project

and

nothing about DTS or anything related to import export is there.

But when i look at the online help i see it.

what can I do about this? I have no access to any kind of DTS at all.

Try the What's New sections in Books Online, or one of the myriad of SQL related web sites, but basically DTS is no more, it has been replaced by SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). Perhaps you know that as you are posting in a SSIS forum, in which case what is your question?

To do simple import/export tasks, use the wizard. Of the several methods to get access to it, I normally right click a database in SQL Server Management Studio, and select the option.

Do you see "Integration Services Project" in the Temnplates list in the New Project dialog box?

if you do not, then you either did not install SSIS or there is a problem with your installation.

Please note: There is no "DTS" in SQL Server 2005. SSIS ( SQL Server Integration Services ) is the replacement for DTS.

No data found when I browse cube

Hi,I have MS SQL Server (& Analysis Server) installed on a Windows 2000 server machine.I installed the MS SQL Server client and Analysis server on my local machine too(Windows NT).Now,I created an Analysis database on my local machine whose data source lies on the Windows 2000 server machine.When I access the cube data from my local m/c,I can see the data.
Then,I took the backup of my local Analysis database(.CAB) and restored it onto the Windows 2000 server machine.But now,when I try to browse the cube data on the Windows 2000 server machine,I don't find any data!!
I don't have to clue about what went wrong.I have installed SP3 on both the machinessql

No certificates available in the Protocols for MSSQKSERVER Properties window

I am trying to set up SQL Server 2005 to use a test certificate from Thawte for SSL encryption. I have installed the certificate in the local computer, current user and service account's personal certificates folders. I have also installed the root certificate in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities folders of each. All this was done using MMC.

However, when I go to tell SQL Server to use the certificate, no certificates show up in the drop down box. I am using SQL Server Configuration Manager and doing the right-click\Properties\Certificate steps shown in multiple KB and forum articles.

I have also checked the registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQLServer\SuperSocketNetLib\Certificate. It is blank, which tells me SQL Server should be looking in the certificate store.

If I simply set the ForceEncryption flag, SQL Server starts up OK and generates a self-signed certificate. Using that, the session does get encrypted. However, I need to use a third party certificate.

I have hit a brick wall and am at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

store the hash, You can manually set the certificate hash if your does not meet all requirements. To see it in SCM, the cert must meet all requirements.

That blog is one of many I have been working with. Here is what I can ascertain so far-

1) It is in the local computer personal share, the current user personal share and the service (MSSQLSERVER) personal share.

2) Timestamps/system time are synched up.

3) Enhanced Key Usage contains these values-

Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1)

Client Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.2)

4) Not sure how/where to check this.

5) Does not apply.

I have also tried to manually set the certificate in the registry by entering the thumbprint of the certificate into the Certificate key. SQL Server will not start, however, when I try that. What is the correct format for doing that?

One other factor I forgot to mention earlier is that this is being done on a VM in our test bed. Would that have any effect on how this stuff works?

Since 5) does not apply, SCM won't be able to find it. So, you can use hash to load. To do this, you need make sure your server is Yukon SP1+.

VM should not affect this if it's connect to your network.

If your cert thumbprint is

48 b7 ba ff 00 23 30 ...The format of the certificate registry should be 48b7baff002330..., i.e. remove all spaces.

For requirement 4), check the details of the cert, in field of Key Usage, it should contain Key Encipherment which is AT_KEYEXCHANGE.

I am currently downloading and installing SP2.

While looking at the cert, I don't see a Key Usage field. All I see is the Enhanced Key Usage field which contains the values I listed above. I tried generating a new cert and didn't see any way to force that option either. Is there a secret to this?

Also, when entering the thumbprint do I need to prefix with 0x or anything?

You should be able to see it with:
"certutil -v -store my" from cmd window.

or try

1. Log on to the computer that issued the certificate request by using an account that has administrative permissions. 2. Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK. 3. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in. 4. In the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box, click Add. 5. Click Certificates, and then click Add. 6. |||Your second one has Key Usage. The first one does not. Where/how do you get the cert? You can contact them why it's different than others. I'm not sure if we can support this cert(most likely not), but you can try using hash.|||

These particular certs are from Thawte. The first one, I believe is their root certificate you can download. The second one is a one of their trial certs.

I put the sha1 hash for certificate 1 (15 6c ad 1e 8c e5 f8 c5 32 e0 c8 41 ca 60 4c 9a ab ad d2 96) into the registry. I am now getting the following error(s) in the log-

No BI Dev Studio after install of Dev edition

I recently installed the Developerâ's edition of SQL Server 2005 so I could
check out the report builder.
After installing on a XP Pro workstation, I looked and it doesnâ't appear to
have installed the Business Intelligence Developer Studio.
Is this not included in the Dev Edition?

No attachments in subscription mail messages

We have reportingservices installed on the sql box. It's a W2K SP4 server
with sql2000 SP3a.
We have deployed several reports. All reports we have deployed after
installing SP1 do not contain an attached report (PDF, TIFF, Excel, CSV) but
when the report is rendered in the body of the message or when we view it in
the viewer there are no problems at all.
Reports deployed before installing SP1 are functioning correctly.

you have to set up specific firewall rules to allow this (at least we had
to)
- On the SMTP server, make sure the 'Limit message size to (KB)' checkbox on
the SMTP Virtual Server property sheet Messages tab, is unchecked or specify
a sufficiently large enough value in the textbox. The default is is 2048KB.
If the default is checked and a report is bigger than this, the email will
not go with the attachment.

No access from Application to SQL Server 2005 - Solved

I have installed the 2005 SQL Server and its up running. I can connect to the database direct as administrator, but my simple test application returns an exception.

SqlConnection con = new SqlConnection("server=mercur\\sqlserver2005,database=AdventureWorks;integrated security=true");

con.Open();

As the output confirms it might be the default settings. Im not familiar with the enviroment and will appreciate your help.

The reason is given in the Exception. The connection string is not valid.

The separation between server string and database string has to be a semicolon and everything works just fine.
