no locks exist

We have an application running on SQL 7 which we just made changes to. Since
then we've been getting intermittant error message saying "no locks exist for
the table: cddegree. Unable to reset the lock status.." This happens about
25% of the time when we try to enter information into a table that has
nothing to do with cddegree. Any ideas would be greatly appreciate.

SQL, we added some fields to two test score tables and modified some stored
procedures to update one of those tables with information from the other
table. Neither table is dependent on the table referred to in the error
message and vice versa.

Hi,
We're running SQL server 2000 standard edition on Windows 2003. I logged in
using my domain account which is member of an admin group. But in Enterprise
Manger, under SQL Server Group, I got 'no items'. How come? I used to be
able to use another domain account in the same admin group to log on and had
no problem. What did I miss?

When you run SQL Server Enterprise Manager for the first time, it should
automatically registers all instances of a local SQL Server, but any
instances that are added afterwards will be not be automatically registered.
You must be on the server where the instance is installed for this to occur.
If you have removed the registration you will need to manually add it again.
Also check that the registry has not been changed/corrupted.

No disk activity during database restore

I am trying to restore a 200 GB database on to a newly formatted SAN
volume. The restore has been running for hours but there doesn't seem
to be a lot of disk activity on the disks I'm restoring to and I'm
wondering if that's anything to worry about.
Using perfmon I'm monitoring the % Disk time for the disk I'm restoring
to. It will show around 99% for a minute or so and then drop to zero
for 3-4 minutes. Is this normal? I know that since I'm restoring to a
new volume that SQL Server needs to zero out the 200 GB before it
starts the actual restore but I would expect to see 100% disk time
while it does this.
Any insight appreciated.

task , this should be changing ...

I see this all the time. Even the IO stats and SPID stats show that nothing
is happening, but it is.
The issue is that before the actual restore can take place, the DB needs to
be created and initialized. This is an operation that SQL Server calls the
OS to do via an API. As the OS just indicates that the operation is still
running, the IO and SPID counter do not change.
The SAN has the instruction, and is doing the hard work. The OS and in turn
SQL Server are waiting for the SAN to finish.
If you were to have 200GB cache on the SAN, the SAN would return almost
immediately and then flush the pages to disk, but you probably don't have so
much, the disk IO is still happening at SAN level.
Deepening on the SAN configuration, 200GB could take anywhere from a few
seconds to a few hours.

Have a look at the SAN management that your SAN vendor supplies. It will
give a you a good idea what is really happening in it.

No Databases in Enterprise Manager

SQL - 2000 running on Win2k Server
I am unable to view my databases in enterprise manager but can see them in Query Analyzer/ODBC. I had deleted a bunch of unused databases last night and after reboot this morning Enterprise manager will not display any of my databases. What have I done?

Try deleting the registered server and then register it
again in Enterprise Manager.
In Enterprise Manager, right click on the server, select
Delete SQL Server Registration. Then right click on the
server group and select new server registration to register
the server again.

no database available

tracdat application has been running for 2yrs plus and today when we tried to get in we get the 'no database available' message. We have other sqlserver databases on the same server and we have not trouble accessing them. I was able to run a query against the database.

What causes the 'no database available message '?

pse give us more deatails about the problem... which tool you used to connect to the sql server... what is the version and edition of sql server u have... from where u are able to query the database etc .. etc..

No Cluster to Cluster

We are going through a process of clustering windows 2000 & sql 2000. We
currently are running windows 2000 server & sql 2000 on a single server,
non-clustered of course. We have the procedures down for creating the
windows cluster and then the sql cluster, but have questions as to migrating
the existing sql data from the non-clustered hardware currently in use. Are
there any items to be aware of when moving sql data from a non-clustered
setup to a clustered setup? Does anyone have a recommendation for some
articles on the best practice to move the sql data to the cluster while
retaining logins, security, db maint plans, dts packages, and other sql
items?

The data/databases don't know or care if they are clustered. So you can
detach them from one machine and attach them to another with no problems.
However, you do need to be aware of these factors in a cluster:
* The databases (user and system) all have to be on a shared drive. If the
drive letter of that drive is different from the drive letter of the
originating instance, you have to take some extra steps which are outlined
in the KB article 314546 HOW TO: Move Databases Between Computers That Are
Running SQL Server http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314546.
* The SQL Server resource must be dependent on any drive with SQL Server
data or backups.
* If you plan to upgrade the existing instance to a clustered instance, you
can do so using setup as long as the data is already moved to a shared
drive. So create the Windows cluster, add a shared drive in its own group
that you plan to use for SQL Server, move all databases to that drive, then
run SQL Enterprise Edition setup to upgrade to a virtual server.
* If the virtual server name is different than the original server name,
run sp_dropserver/sp_addserver (local) to get @.@.servername correct. Note
that this only works when moving databases, not for renaming an existing
virtual instance. To rename an existing virtual instance you have to
reinstall with the correct name to get all the registry keys updated
properly.

no blocking with bulk insert

I am running in QA:
Bulk insert tableA from 'C:\file.tab'
In another window ,
select * from tableA gives me no records .. I would assume some kind of
blocking while the bulk insert does it jobs. So what exactly does bulk
insert to ? The job is running and the tab file has 50 million records but
still on the second window i can query and in sp_lock all I can see for the
table is an IX tab lock and theres no blocking too. I am using SQL 2000
So whats going on ?In addition after like 15 mins, it started blocking.. So my question is what
was it doing till then.. Does it try to read the file first or something ?

>|||No your are experiencing the effect of lock escalation. When you start the
bulk insert with no batch size or a batch size of 0 (zero) the complete file
will be inserted as one batch, so the lock accumulate and at a certain point
in time escalate to a table lock.
In order to prevent this you can take two approaches:
1) Use a batch size of 2499 to prevent the lock escalation form happening
2) Before you start the bulk insert take a rowlock on an entry in the table,
I always do this by inserting a dummy record at the end of the table. Keep
the lock. In another session do the bulk insert, because there is a lock
present you can not escalate to a table lock.

No authentication prompt when running report

Strange problem: When I go to the reports site, I get prompted to login. I
can log in successfully. When I attempt to run a report, I should be
prompted again. For some reason, I am not getting prompted when running the
report so I am given an Action canceled, web page could not be found error.
The strange part is that if I log into the Reports site on the server hosting
reports, I am prompted this second time and can run the report successfully.
Does anyone know of any authentication settings that might be causing this
behavior?Hello,

enabled for report manager.
However, if you use Windows authentication, you shall not be prompted to
log on in the first place. You may want to check the following IE settings:
Tools->Internet Options->Security->Custom level
Under User authentication, check if "Prompt for user name and password" is
selected.

site is set up in Trusted Zones and it is set to prompt for un/pw. On the
server, both the Reports and Reports Server vdirs are set to Basic Auth. The
domain is not configured to work with windows auth so I should be prompted
twice. This is the case on a second server I have SQL Reports configured on
and it works correctly. Any further ideas?

log on as a user with admin role on SRS to test.

The user is a content admin. I have also tried it with the domain admin.
The strangest part about this is that I get the second prompt and the report
loads successfully when accessing it from the web server. It's only remote
connections that have this behavior.

Based on my further research, this issue might relate to MS04-044. Please
refer to the following article for details:
Implement a Single-Sign On solution by using basic authentication and
Internet Explorer client
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;837104
You may want to check if you have this update installed. Also, please check
if there is any proxy settings on the clients. You may want to check if the
issue occurs for Windows XP SP2/Win2003 SP1 machine.
If the issue persists, you may want to use netmon to trace the HTTP packets
to see the sequence of packets.

I am having the exact same problem. It appears that credential information
is being automatically in some cases, but apparently is not doing it

I was able to find the solution to my problem - it boiled down to a name
resolution problem. I am hoping this may help you with your problem.
I installed an HTTP logging tool for my client machine. I found a free one
called HttpWatch. [ The product installs a toolbar button in Explorer -
click on it to get the Watch window. Press Record to start logging browser
requests. ]
What i noticed is that the when my report loaded, all images loaded fine,
except for the frame which is supposed to display the actual report. In that
frame, I get a 'page cannot be displayed' error. I matched the HTTP request
for this frame to an HTTP error ( ERROR_INTERNET_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED) in the
HttpWatch log. The HTTP request for that frame was apparently using the name
of the server that is *only visible inside the company intranet*. This means
that the report would only display properly if Reporting Services was running
on the same machine as the client browser, or within the intranet.
I think the frame is using the internal name of the server because of a
setting configured when Reporting Services was installed. So, one fix may be
to reinstall RS and use a server name that resolves in the intranet and on
the global internet. I am currently fishing through config files and the
registry to see if reinstall is not necessary. If I find it, I'll post
another reply.
[ Note, if you only care about getting access from your own machine, you can
manually add a name-server/ip address mapping in the file

According to the sympotms, it seems to be related to FQDN or name
resolution. How did you configure <ReportServerUrl> in
RSWebApplication.Config? How
did you configure <UrlRoot> in RSReportServer.Config ? If you change them
to FQDN URL, what is the result?

I resolved this issue on Friday afternoon and came in this morning to see
that the resolution had been posted here as well. It did end up being a DNS
issue. I changed the Report Server URL in the RSWebApplication.config to
reflect the web machine's IP and I can now load the report. I'm still not
sure why it doesn't prompt me a second time (as it does successfully in a
second similarly structured domain) but the reports are now loading which is
what I'm more concerned with. Thanks so much for your attention and time.

Apparently, there is another config entry in RSReportServer.Config that you
can add to resolve this problem. There are other posts in this forum about
it - but it looks like this:
<ReportServerExternalUrl></ReportServerExternalUrl>
Obviously, you set the proper,externally visible url inside the tag. It
worked for me!
Notes: 1) the spelling and caps are very important for the tag. 2) for more
details about this config file entry, you can search the Reporting Services
help.
